Toyota Top Speed Control Complaints Data analysis shows | World Largest Automobile Company Toyota

World Largest Automobile Company Toyota | Toyota Cars | Automobile Company Toyota | Auto Mobile Company Toyota | Toyota Vehicles | Top Speed Car of Toyota | Automobile Maker Company Toyota | Toyota Car Company | New Top Speed Series Cars of Toyota | Toyota Top Speed Cars Series | News Series of Toyota | Toyota New Top Speed Cars

In a pattern almost unbroken since 2004, speed control problems are a higher proportion of Toyota's driver complaint filings than they are for other big automakers, a USA TODAY analysis of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data from 2000 to mid-March of this year has found.

The analysis showed 11.7% of the vehicle components named in driver complaints to NHTSA about Toyota-made vehicles in that period were in the safety agency's "vehicle speed control" category. That is the NHTSA complaint category that covers most incidents of unintended acceleration, the problem underlying Toyota's huge recalls in recent months.

The five others among the top six automakers in the U.S. market ranged from General Motors' 2.2% to Ford's 4.8% over the decade.

The analysis excluded the "cruise control" category that's one of several "speed control" classifications. Those weren't directly related to the current issue of stuck gas pedals.

The analysis is similar to an approach used by safety officials to spot troubling trends. It suggests that Toyota's problems with sticking and jammed gas pedals could have been spotted earlier.

Toyota said that it disputes USA TODAY's analysis, because the NHTSA data are polluted by what Toyota says would be "a variety of non-UA (unintended-acceleration) events" listed in NHTSA's "vehicle speed control" category. The automaker said it "disagrees with both the methodology and implications suggested by USA TODAY's analyses," and said, "Toyota has substantially superior performance in terms of complaints to NHTSA."

Jammed and sticking gas pedals have forced Toyota to recall millions of vehicles and to appear before often-hostile committees of the U.S. House and Senate the past few weeks whose members questioned whether the recalls should have been sooner and should cover more vehicle models. The problems also have tarnished Toyota's quality image and led it to offer dramatic incentives to recapture sales lost over safety worries.

Now Toyota faces a legal assault as lawsuits mount over everything from diminished resale value for used vehicles to endangering public safety. Thursday in San Diego, a federal judicial panel heard arguments on whether more than 100 lawsuits will be consolidated into one court.

Starting Oct. 5, Toyota began a series of recalls, now totaling 7.7 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles, to fix gas pedals that could stick, floor mats that could jam gas pedals, and what Toyota acknowledges are improperly designed, shaped and sized pedals themselves.

It hasn't helped Toyota's image that it recalled 55,000 vehicles for the floor-mat issue in 2007 and the automaker's Washington office later bragged in an internal presentation — made public in the congressional hearings — that it saved more than $100 million by negotiating such a small recall with NHTSA.

"If Toyota isn't fined by the government, I'd be very surprised," says Clarence Ditlow, head of the Center for Auto Safety, longtime observer, and frequent critic, of both the government safety agency and the auto industry. Automakers can be penalized up to $16.4 million for each recall not announced within five business days after a safety problem is identified.

The automaker previously has said it recalled vehicles promptly. And company President Akio Toyoda, in an unusual appearance by a foreign chief executive at a congressional hearing, testified last month that he didn't learn of acceleration problems until late last year, when the company was recalling vehicles.

NHTSA, which also came in for criticism at the hearings for not acting sooner, last month sent Toyota letters about three of the recent recalls. The letters insist on proof the automaker announced the recalls promptly. They also question whether the recalls have been broad enough and why some models with another potentially troublesome component — electronic throttle controls — weren't included. The letters — known as timeliness queries and recall queries — have the force of subpoenas but can yield more useful information because they can seek documents generally and needn't specify what the car company must submit, says the Department of Transportation, which oversees NHTSA.

NHTSA is "working to get to the bottom of the unintended-acceleration issue by undertaking a new review of possible causes, including potential electromagnetic interference (EMI)" with electronic throttle control systems, says DOT spokeswoman Olivia Alair.

Toyota has maintained, and repeated in a public statement earlier this week, that it is "making an all-out effort to address the two specific mechanical causes of unintended acceleration we've identified" — mats and sticking pedals — and, "We're very confident that the system is not the cause of alleged unintended acceleration. Toyota engineers have repeatedly and rigorously tested our (electronic throttle controls) and have never found a single case of unintended acceleration due to a defect in the system."

Microsoft is to ask millions of users across Europe if they want to use a web browser other than its own | Microsoft offers browser choices to Europeans

Windows users will be offered the choice as part of a deal Microsoft struck with the European Commission.

The agreement resolves a long-running case in which the software giant was accused of abusing its market position.

A pop-up window will prompt people to choose and install one of 12 different browsers or let them stick with Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

Install options

The browser choice software will be delivered from Monday as part of the Windows Update system Microsoft usually uses to distribute security patches.

Although the update has been prepared for Windows XP, Vista and 7, not all users will see it.

It will not pop up in front of those who already run a different default browser, such as Firefox, Safari or Chrome.

Users guaranteed to see it are those that have Internet Explorer (IE) set as their default browser and have taken the option to let Windows automatically download and install updates.

Those that have this option turned off will be prompted to download, install and run the software.

Those that have automatic updates turned off can go to the Windows Update site and run a "Check For Updates" to get it.

When it runs, the software will present users with a window that says in bold text "An important choice to make: your browser". It also asks people to ensure they are connected to the internet.

Once the "OK" button is clicked, they will see a screen that lists the 12 browsers available.

The Opera, Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Internet Explorer browsers are randomly ordered on the first section of this screen.

Another seven browsers, namely Sleipnir, Green Browser, Maxthon, Avant, Flock, K-meleon, and Slim, will be randomly ordered on the rest of the screen. They can be viewed by scrolling sideways.

Below each listing will be a button giving more information. Another button lets users install one of the browsers.

Alternatively, users can opt to ignore the selection and make a choice later. If they do this a shortcut icon will appear on the Windows desktop that gives access to the browser choice window at any time.

The choice screen will keep appearing until a user has made a choice.

Anyone wanting to stick with IE will be prompted to upgrade to the latest version.

Microsoft said that Windows 7 users who have fixed or "pinned" IE to their taskbar will have it unpinned by the update. Right clicking the icon for any browser will let users pin that program to the taskbar.

It is not yet clear what effect the browser choice will have on Internet Explorer's market share.

Although exact estimates are hard to find, web stats firm Net Applications said IE is used by 62% market share. Its closest rival is Firefox at 24%.

Some fear the browser choice system will confuse people. Already some who have been confronted with the choice screen have been worried that their machine has been taken over or fallen victim to a virus.

Apple iPad | Before the iPad, there was the ThinkPad | iPad Video | iPad Pics

The ThinkPad came long before the Apple iPad. Lenovo makes this clear in a video showing the genesis of the ThinkPad brand name, though the clip raises some pesky questions.

As some quick background--and as many readers probably know--a line of laptops using the same ThinkPad brand name ultimately became a hit for IBM, though the PC business overall didn't pan out financially for Big Blue, which sold it to Lenovo in 2004.

IBM was first: In the video, the Lenovo marketing executive (originally an IBM employee) talks about how IBM, in 1990, designed the ThinkPad 700T slate computer with a cutting-edge (at that time) magnesium case; how it used an "integrated heatsink" to obviate the need for a fan; and used a flash drive instead of a hard disk drive. Again, all of this way back in 1990.

While certainly an enlightening video, it still leaves one wondering why Lenovo is talking about this in the past tense. In other words, if IBM had such a head start in 1990, why is everyone fixated on Apple's tablet and why aren't we drooling over some highly evolved Lenovo Pad today? (Note: the Lenovo U1, though compelling, is a little late.)

I'm sure there are hundreds of reasons why IBM, and later Lenovo, didn't have a commercially successful consumer slate device (no, I'm not talking about a convertible laptop), but it seems odd that consumers have to wait for Apple to bring out a tablet before anyone takes serious notice of the slate computer.

So, what happened? Here's one facile answer. In the intervening 20 years, IBM sold off its PC business while Apple actually made a commercial success of innovative consumer designs and ballooned into one of the largest and most successful consumer device makers in the world.

Tearing down Twitter's walls | Twitter has become hugely popular | Open Source

Remember those crazy days of e-mail when you couldn't send messages between systems? Microsoft Mail customers could only send mail within their enterprise or to other customers of Microsoft Mail (ditto for the other systems). It wasn't until SMTP standardized things that e-mail could move between systems.

E-mail was interesting then, but it didn't really become dominant until it standardized around the SMTP messaging protocol.

Are we experiencing the same thing with Twitter?

Twitter has become hugely popular, but it remains a closed communication medium. Yes, it has opened its data stream and maintains an open API approach to its development, but Twitter is still a silo.

Yes, it's a big (and growing) silo, but then, so were AOL and Compuserve in their day.

There is a better way, and it's arguably the direction the industry is going to need to take for microblogging services like Twitter to become as big as e-mail. We need to standardize. We need an SMTP-like standard for microblogging.

And, frankly, we need an open-source implementation.

Open-source Sendmail was arguably the first messaging system to embrace SMTP. Sendmail gave would-be e-mail adopters a free (as in cost and freedom) e-mail system to explore, which led to Sendmail becoming the world's most popular message transfer agent.

Microblogging could use the same, and StatusNet's open-source micro-blogging software could well play that role. StatusNet is the company behind Identi.ca, the microblogging platform favored by the free and open-source crowd.

In terms of public blogging, Identi.ca is still more a curiosity than a real contender with Twitter. But, as in e-mail, it's probably not wise to underestimate the value of an open-source approach to standardizing microblogging intercommunications, particularly as microblogging enters the enterprise.

For example, enterprises that want to move beyond Twitter's one-size-fits-all approach to microblogging might prefer Yammer's microblogging-behind-the-firewall approach, an approach that StatusNet also offers. But StatusNet takes it further by enabling enterprises to set up a micro-blogging service that customers, employees, and partners could collaborate on. A private-public microblogging network, as it were, and completely based on open source and standards.

AOL once sat atop the consumer e-mail world, even as Twitter dominates microblogging today. Eventually, standards won out in e-mail. I expect we'll see much the same thing in microblogging. The question is, how long will it take?

Toyota to Unveil Plan to Fix Millions of Pedals | Toyota Motor | Toyota, the world's biggest automaker

TOKYO — Toyota Motor Corp. will give details early Monday in the U.S. on how it plans to fix gas pedals in millions of vehicles being recalled there.

The plan will come in a release at 6:30 a.m EST and will be followed by a conference call for the media at 11 a.m. EST, Toyota Motor Sales USA said. Toyota spokesman Paul Nolasco in Tokyo declined comment.

Toyota has recalled 4.2 million cars and trucks in North America, Europe and China to fix accelerator pedals that can get stuck or are slow to return when released, increasing the risk of a crash. The recalls do not involve Toyota models made and sold in Japan.

American dealers have told The Associated Press that Toyota will disclose details of the fix Monday morning. One dealer was told by a Toyota executive that replacement parts could arrive Thursday or Friday.

The automaker told the dealers about the plan Saturday after hearing from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it did not object to the fix, the dealers said.

Toyota, the world's biggest automaker, says the problem in the gas pedals is rare and is caused by condensation that builds up in the gas pedal assembly.

Several dealers have said the fix involves slipping a shim into an area where springs push the gas pedal back to its resting position after a driver has eased off the gas.

Dealers have been eager to fix the cars ever since the recall was announced on Jan. 21.

The recall in the U.S. covers 2.3 million vehicles and involves the 2009-10 RAV4 crossover, the 2009-10 Corolla, the 2009-10 Matrix hatchback, the 2005-10 Avalon, the 2007-10 Camry, the 2010 Highlander crossover, the 2007-10 Tundra pickup and the 2008-10 Sequoia SUV.

The faulty gas pedals were made by CTS Corp. of Elkhart, Indiana. Toyota said last week it has begun shipping new gas pedals systems to American dealers.

Toyota has halted production and sales of the models covered by the recall until they can be repaired. Toyota has not said when production will resume.

The pedal recall is separate from a recall involving floor mats that can bend and push down accelerators.

The two recalls combined affect more than 7 million vehicles worldwide, threatening to tarnish the brand image of an automaker that had prided itself on quality.

Mozilla releases first mobile Firefox browser | Mozilla Mobile Internet Browser | Fire Fox Browser For Mobile | Internet Browser For Mobile

Mozilla has been steadily creeping toward its goal of releasing the first Firefox browser for mobile phones. On Friday, Firefox 1.0 for Nokia's Maemo--previously code-named Fennec--arrived.

Firefox for the Maemo 5 platform has a few interesting conceits that set it apart from other mobile browsers, like Opera Mobile and Opera Mini. Mozilla is banking on the uniqueness of its claim to fame--third-party, customizable browser extensions--to help its browser win mobile market share. Add-ons, after all, helped make Firefox the top browser alternative to Internet Explorer in the desktop space. To punctuate the importance of add-ons for Firefox's mobile browser, Mozilla also pushed out on Friday the general release of its bookmark and history-syncing extension, Weave Sync 1.0, for both desktop and mobile.

Mozilla's accomplishment with a mobile version of Firefox is a mixed one, and not only because Maemo is a platform relatively few people have heard of. Nokia's open-source, Linux-based Maemo operating system supports mobile Firefox on just two devices--the N900 and the N810, an Internet tablet. To make matters more limited, just two days ago Mozilla unveiled a third release candidate with a last-minute decision to pull wholesale support for Adobe's Flash plug-in from the build, citing unhappiness with the overall standard of quality. As an aside, this is apparently a sore spot for Adobe, who became miffed with Apple for excluding Flash in its new iPad device about the same time that Mozilla made its comment about degraded performance when visiting Flash sites.

Yet what kind of mobile browser would Firefox be if users couldn't watch videos or adequately view Web sites that heavily rely on Flash? Not a browser anyone could take seriously. As a workaround, Mozilla has released an add-on called YouTube enabler, that early adopters can install to view YouTube videos. Mozilla is hoping to work out other solutions for those who are wary of optionally installing the Flash plug-in, but still want to see select Flash-based content.

Luckily for Mozilla, a relatively small sliver of the mobile phone-toting population actually has one of the two compatible devices, so there's time to smooth out Firefox before it matures on another mobile platform. Windows Mobile is slated to be next, with Android to follow. You can download Firefox 1.0 for Maemo here, and read more details in Mozilla's blog post.

We'll have more hands-on coverage of Firefox 1.0 for Maemo in the next few days, so keep tuning in to CNET.

Yelp's iPhone app gets check-ins, friend stalking | Yelp's iPhone

As of late, Yelp's iPhone app (iTunes link) has been on the cutting edge of new features on the social-rating service. The latest version, which rolled out as an update late Friday, is no exception.

Among the new features is the idea of "checking in" to a local businesses, which will let you alert your Yelp friends that you're there--complete with a push notification. Yelp will also reward repeat visitors by denoting them as "regulars," with the most often visiting party getting a special badge.

Sound familiar? You might have used Foursquare or Gowalla, which do most (or in Foursquare's case all) of these things.

That's not to say the idea of checking in is an unwelcome feature. It's giving businesses a new way to track Yelp user activity, something Yelp says could be encouraged through special rewards for its regular patrons. It's also containing Yelp's community within itself, and not just relying on external social networks like Twitter and Facebook, though as part of this release Yelp has added the option to blast out your check-ins to both.

Yelp is also doing Foursquare one better by putting your friends on a map--akin to Google's Latitude. This even works in Yelp's iPhone-only "monocle" mode, which uses the iPhone 3GS' camera to display restaurant locations (see a video of this). With the update it will now signal if a friend is at a certain location, as well as splitting the screen with a live map of the area.

Other new features include a way to invite people in your address book to Yelp. The app can also cross-reference your contact list to see if someone there is already on Yelp. Another big change is that the App now lets users edit all parts of their Yelp profile. In many ways, this signals that Yelp is finally getting comfortable with the fact that a good portion of its mobile users are likely accessing the site from just the app, and less so the main Yelp site.

Yelp's iPhone app continues to get the most attention of all its mobile apps, with the other platforms getting some of these cutting edge features a little later. A Yelp representative told CNET that the check-in system would be making its way onto other platforms in the near future, beginning first with Yelp's own site sometime next week. In the meantime, the company is working on getting the augmented reality monocle feature on Google's Android platform.
