Mozilla releases first mobile Firefox browser | Mozilla Mobile Internet Browser | Fire Fox Browser For Mobile | Internet Browser For Mobile

Mozilla has been steadily creeping toward its goal of releasing the first Firefox browser for mobile phones. On Friday, Firefox 1.0 for Nokia's Maemo--previously code-named Fennec--arrived.

Firefox for the Maemo 5 platform has a few interesting conceits that set it apart from other mobile browsers, like Opera Mobile and Opera Mini. Mozilla is banking on the uniqueness of its claim to fame--third-party, customizable browser extensions--to help its browser win mobile market share. Add-ons, after all, helped make Firefox the top browser alternative to Internet Explorer in the desktop space. To punctuate the importance of add-ons for Firefox's mobile browser, Mozilla also pushed out on Friday the general release of its bookmark and history-syncing extension, Weave Sync 1.0, for both desktop and mobile.

Mozilla's accomplishment with a mobile version of Firefox is a mixed one, and not only because Maemo is a platform relatively few people have heard of. Nokia's open-source, Linux-based Maemo operating system supports mobile Firefox on just two devices--the N900 and the N810, an Internet tablet. To make matters more limited, just two days ago Mozilla unveiled a third release candidate with a last-minute decision to pull wholesale support for Adobe's Flash plug-in from the build, citing unhappiness with the overall standard of quality. As an aside, this is apparently a sore spot for Adobe, who became miffed with Apple for excluding Flash in its new iPad device about the same time that Mozilla made its comment about degraded performance when visiting Flash sites.

Yet what kind of mobile browser would Firefox be if users couldn't watch videos or adequately view Web sites that heavily rely on Flash? Not a browser anyone could take seriously. As a workaround, Mozilla has released an add-on called YouTube enabler, that early adopters can install to view YouTube videos. Mozilla is hoping to work out other solutions for those who are wary of optionally installing the Flash plug-in, but still want to see select Flash-based content.

Luckily for Mozilla, a relatively small sliver of the mobile phone-toting population actually has one of the two compatible devices, so there's time to smooth out Firefox before it matures on another mobile platform. Windows Mobile is slated to be next, with Android to follow. You can download Firefox 1.0 for Maemo here, and read more details in Mozilla's blog post.

We'll have more hands-on coverage of Firefox 1.0 for Maemo in the next few days, so keep tuning in to CNET.

Brown goes into battle with billions for defence | Gordon Brown will put two new aircraft

Gordon Brown will put two new aircraft carriers at the heart of his vision for the military this week as he commits Labour to billions of pounds of extra defence spending.

At the same time, defence chiefs are exploring how closer military links with France and the potential benefits of an entente cordiale could tackle future dangers with limited resources.

The Prime Minister will use the launch of a Green Paper on the future of the Armed Forces to promise a new generation of warships and fast jets over the coming decade. He will also guarantee an extra £1.5 billion for the war in Afghanistan, and promise to safeguard defence spending from any cuts next year.

Mr Brown aims to display Labour commitment to the military while also forcing the Conservatives to say whether they would match such spending.

His pledges will include:

• going ahead with two 65,000-tonne aircraft carriers at a cost of £5 billion;

• maintaining troop numbers in the Army at more than 100,000; and

• committing a future government to the Joint Strike Fighter, costing £10 billion, and completing the £20 billion Typhoon programme.

The list will prompt questions about how an incoming government could afford such sums at a time of deep spending cuts across Whitehall. A government source said there would have to be “tough decisions elsewhere”.

The Green Paper, which paves the way for a strategic defence review after the election, will examine the nature of future threats and conflicts and Britain’s ability to respond. “It recognises that no country with the possible exception of the United States can do all this by itself,” said a source who has seen the report.

Britain’s partnership with the US will remain an important factor but France is also seen as a main ally, particularly in delivering joint leadership on defence in Europe. “We are like an old married couple who bicker a lot but we know that we can’t live without each other,” the source said.

He added that the outgoing French Chief of the Defence Staff held meetings in London last week in which he highlighted the need to work together.

Liam Fox, the Shadow Defence Secretary, said that Paris and Washington would be the two main strategic partners for a Conservative government. But he said there would have to be difficult decisions about spending, and procurement projects in particular.George Osborne, the Shadow Chancellor, has not given a commitment to the aircraft carrier programme. Both the aircraft carriers and jets that would operate from them have been subjected to delays and huge cost increases. Some analysts say that much of the planned hardware is no longer the best way of countering the most likely future threats of insurgency-style warfare, nuclear proliferation and international terrorist attacks.

A government source said the Ministry of Defence would look to cut up to 10,000 extra civilian jobs, without waiting for the Strategic Defence Review.

Britain and France, both nuclear powers, are the only two countries in the European Union that spend more than 2 per cent of national income on defence. They also face similar financial problems, making collaboration an attractive option, even though attempts in the past, such as a joint Frigate project in the 1980s and 1990s, failed to get off the ground.

Asia now world's biggest air travel market: IATA | Biggest Air Travel Market Asia | World Biggest Air Market | Air Market | Biggest Air Travel Market

SINGAPORE: The Asia-Pacific region has overtaken North America as the world's largest air travel market with 647 million passengers in 2009, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said on Monday.

By contrast, 638 million people flew on commercial flights in North America last year, IATA said at an aviation business conference on the eve of the Singapore Airshow featuring the world's leading aviation industry players.

Within Asia, China has eclipsed Japan over the past decade as the region's largest domestic market, with 1,400 aircraft compared with Japan's 540 and 5.7 million weekly seats against 2.6 million in Japan.

IATA director general Giovanni Bisignani told the conference that the Asia-Pacific market will continue to grow rapidly with an estimated 217 million additional air passengers a year in the region by 2013.

"While we see dynamism and diversity within the region, the aspect of Asia-Pacific that excites me most is its potential," said Bisignani.

"More than a quarter of the 2.2 billion people who flew last year, or 647 million people, flew within Asia-Pacific markets.

"It has eclipsed travel within North America as the traditional leader in traffic numbers."

IATA represents some 230 carriers that account for more than 90 percent of scheduled air traffic, but does not include many of the budget airlines credited with a boom in short and medium-haul travel in recent years.

Its members in Europe, the Asia-Pacific region, and North America recorded year-on-year declines in passenger demand of 5.0 to 5.6 percent in 2009, according to an earlier IATA report.

But Asian airlines staged a stronger recovery in demand in December, at nearly twice the global average, while travel on European and North American carriers stagnated or slipped.

Gunmen kill 13 students at high school party in Mexico | the gunmen attacked the students |

MEXICO: Suspected drug hitmen burst into a party and killed 13 high school students, on Sunday in Ciudad Juarez, the latest massacre in one of the world's deadliest cities, Mexican media and witnesses said.

Gunmen jumped out of sport utility vehicles and fired at the students, who were celebrating victory in a local American Football championship, in a house in the city across the border from El Paso, Texas, in the early hours of Sunday.

"The men drove up in four SUVs, they were well-armed. They went into the house and shot at everyone, you could hear the gunfire all around," a neighbor at the scene said.

It was not immediately clear why the gunmen attacked the students.

But drug hitmen have attacked parties in the city, searching for rivals, while police have reported that some teenagers have been involved in kidnapping others.

Ciudad Juarez is the bloodiest city in Mexico's drug war as rival cartels fight over markets and control of smuggling routes into the United States.

Violence is escalating even as federal police and soldiers patrol the streets.

Some 2,650 people were killed in drug violence in Ciudad Juarez last year and cartel murders have jumped since the start of 2010.

In some of the worst attacks, gunmen have stormed at least seven drug rehabilitation clinics in the manufacturing city over the past two years targeting rival dealers.

Two strikes in September killed 28 people. Mexico is the key transit route for US-bound cocaine from South America and a top producer of marijuana and heroin.

A military crackdown on rival cartels in Mexico has fueled a surge in drug violence that has killed more than 17,000 people over the past three years.

A R Rahman strikes Grammys gold | Rahman wins 2 Grammys for Slumdog Millionaire | Grammys Awards Win A R Rahman |

LOS ANGELES: Indian composer A R Rahman scored a double triumph at the Grammy Awards here, scooping two early honours for his music from Oscar-winning film "Slumdog Millionaire".

Rahman won the first Grammy of the pre-show at the Staples Center in the best compilation soundtrack for a motion picture category before his "Jai Ho" won in the best motion picture song category moments later.

"This is insane, god is great again," Rahman said as he accepted his second award before a VIP audience.

Rahman's rivals in the soundtrack category included Steve Jordan for "Cadillac Records," Quentin Tarantino for "Inglourious Basterds", and the producers of "Twilight" and "True Blood."

In the best song category Rahman's beaten rivals included Bruce Springsteen for his song "The Wrestler", from the Oscar-nominated movie of the same name.

The Grammy success comes after Rahman earned two Oscars for his music in "Slumdog Millionaire" at last year's Academy Awards.

The talented music maestro picked up the best original score statuette before scooping the best song Oscar.

Andrea Bocelli Blind | Bocelli | Luciano Pavarotti | Mary J Blige | Mary J. Blige, Andrea Bocelli Offer Support To Haiti At The Grammys

Mary J. Blige delivered yet again, this time with a moving performance of Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" at Sunday night's (January 31) Grammy Awards, following her recent performance during the "Hope for Haiti Now" telethon.

Blige and opera star Andrea Bocelli stepped onstage after an introduction by Wyclef Jean and partnered for a heartfelt collaboration.

Blige has already contributed to the Haitian relief effort following the devastating earthquake that struck the tiny country. Her take on "Hard Times Come Again No More" was one of the highlights of the George Clooney-led occasion.

But Blige said the island nation needs continued support. The singer, along with a producer and record executive, thought the Grammy Awards would be another opportunity to raise awareness for Haiti. "Myself, David Foster and Ron Fair, we were brainstorming about the Grammys, and we felt that it was important for Haiti to understand that we are their bridge right now over troubled water," Blige told MTV News earlier this week about the number. "And we'll lay ourselves down for them to get over, and that's why we did it."

"Bridge Over Trouble Water" is the title track from Simon & Garfunkel's final studio album together, released in 1970, and won both Song of the Year and Record of the Year at the 1971 Grammy Awards. The fundraising tune will be released as an iTunes/Target.com download. All proceeds from its sale will go to the American Red Cross for earthquake recovery efforts in the devastated Caribbean island nation.

Andrea Bocelli Mary J. Blige “Bridge Over Troubled Water” Performance 2010 Grammy Awards

Grammy-winning performers Andrea Bocelli and Mary J. Blige are hoping to raise money for the earthquake relief efforts in Haiti with their 40th Anniversary revival of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water –” which they performed onstage during the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards at Staples Center in Los Angeles on Sunday night.

“It’s the most amazing thing. We actually have a chemistry that works,” Blige said Wednesday after the Recording Academy
announced that she and Bocelli would sing Bridge Over Troubled Water on Sunday’s Grammy Awards show. “What made me want to do this is the fact that this is a world situation,” Blige said. “Andrea represents another place that is feeling what’s happening in Haiti, too. I felt it was important for people to see us as a team representing what needs to be done.”

Acid-washed is an 'ironic' fashion, never meant to flatter

When I wear my new acid-washed jeans, my boyfriend says I look like Jon Bon Jovi and starts whistling Whitesnake songs. He also said that I look like a Spitting Image sketch featuring Rod Stewart. What can I do?

Drifter, Lonely street of dreams

Drifter, I like the sound of your boyfriend, or at least the sound of his cultural reference points. Whitesnake? Bon Jovi? Spitting Image? Rod Stewart? All vibing off one pair of jeans? And get you, with the Whitesnake-lyric reference in your address (obviously, I had to look that up – I'm not that sad; sorry, I mean erudite). I would like to spend an evening round at yours with your iPod on shuffle, I don't mind telling you.

But to your question. I'm not sure if there's much you can do, Drifter, because you are caught between high fashion and straightforward aesthetics. The former is where you reside, embracing with suspicious keenness the re-emergence of acid-washed denim as a fashionable look (suspicious, I say, because your palpable pride, clear from the way you describe the jeans so lovingly, suggests you have been waiting for this fashion moment for the past, oh, 20 years).

Your Whitesnake-whistling gentleman, however, is more interested in straightforward aesthetics because – and I say this with nothing but respect for your fashion devotion – no one has ever looked good in acid-wash denim. Ever. I'd apologise for the brusqueness of my commentary here but you're a smart lady and you already know that looking good is not the point of acid-washing.

Acid-washing falls under a category known in the trade as "ironic fashion" (see also: leg warmers, jumpsuits, high-heeled trainers, boilersuits and anything that is overly literal in its 70s or 80s homage). This is fashion that isn't interested in being flattering; it's about making a reference. But I am guessing that your boyfriend is one of the many people in the world who believes that irony is an attitude that is best expressed orally, not sartorially. Am I right, or am I right?

And so, Drifter, you and me and your Bon Jovi aficionado reach an impasse. The two of you will never agree here. You're like America's right- and leftwing, and any attempt at compromise will end in ignominy, simply because it is impossible.

But I suspect you will not be easily parted from your much-loved, long-awaited acid-washed numbers. So I guess the only thing to do here is to develop a fondness for Whitesnake being whistled at you. And I also suspect that this, too, will come to you naturally.

I have started to wear my jeans with turn-ups of about 2in. I think I am in danger of looking like a sailor, but I feel more comfortable doing this than going for the jeans-tucked-into-boots military look, which is not that comfortable and not really appropriate for a man in his mid-30s. Friends seem to be critical whichever style I go for. Help.

Confused Boots, London

Well, Confused, I think you are well named here because it is clear that your confusion lies not so much with your jeans but with your boots.

Here is what I think: while I'm not sure if it is "not really appropriate" for a man in his 30s to tuck his jeans into his boots, I would say it's a little too "Hey! Have you checked out my boots?" from any person of any age.

But you don't like the turn-ups, either. Confused, you're going to have to make a choice and commit here: either you tuck them in, roll them up, or get slimmer boots in the Chelsea boot mode and let the jeans hang over them. You may be able to get away with being high-maintenance in all other aspects of your life, able to bend the world to your specific liking, but in the fashion world we don't have any truck with such nonsense – you just have to deal with it.

Of course, the other option is you get a pair of sailor-style trousers, or even flares, and then you don't have to do anything at all, but rather let them fall naturally around your beloved boots. Oh, wait a minute, you don't like the naval look either, right? Confused, I wash my hands.

Grammys 2010: Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and Michael Jackson's Prince and Paris rule awards | Grammys 2010 | Grammy Awards last night

In a mild upset, Beyonce Knowles, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift only won most of the awards at the 52nd annual Grammy Awards last night.

But they did have to share the stage with a public appearance by Prince and Paris Jackson, who accepted a lifetime achievement award for their late father Michael.

Prince thanked God, his family, his father and Michael’s fans.

Thanks largely to the three glamorous ladies, hooks and looks dominated the 52nd annual awards almost as completely as they dominated last year’s pop radio.

Beyonce won song of the year as the cowriter of her smash “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It), and she won four statuettes in the pre-telecast part of the show. Swift won for best country album, best country vocal and best country song. Lady Gaga won best dance album for “The Fame” and best dance recording for “Poker Face,” which she also performed to kick off the show.

Kings of Leon crashed ladies’ night to win three awards, including record of the year for “Use Somebody.” That song also won them best rock song and best hard rock group performance.

The Zac Brown Band won best artist and provided a change of pace in the live performance by opening its set with “America.”

The Black-Eyed Peas also won three awards, for short-form video, pop performance by a group and pop vocal album.

But the focus of the show was performance, as last night’s show reflected the shift in many televised awards shows away from presentation to promotion.

Gaga set the tone, kicking off the show with a rendition of her omnipresent “Poker Face” that featured a cast of thousands.

Not to be outdone, Beyonce performed with a similar-sized group, though she went for elegance where Gaga went for offbeat, seguing into a piano duet with Elton John that featured smudged faces straight out of Charles Dickens.

Swift sang her own omnipresent and multiply nominated “You Belong With Me,” after honing her ethereal image by singing a duet with “my idol” Stevie Nicks.

The Black-Eyed Peas performed “I Got a Feeling,” another foundation of the 2009 sound, and Pink performed a remarkable number that crossed the girl on the flying trapeze with pole dancing.

The show turned more serious with a tribute to the late Michael Jackson, in which his own track for “Earth Song” was accompanied live by Usher, Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood and Smokey Robinson.

Mary J. Blige also performed a song for Haitian relief.

But the show was clearly designed as a contemporary entertainment spectacle.

Opera, which at one time was a featured part of the show, last night was the trigger for a good-natured joke, as Robert Downey introduced an “operatic performance” by a group that turned out to include Jamie Foxx and Slash.

Beyonce’s pre-telecast awards included female R&B vocal and best R&B song for “Single Ladies,” traditional R&B vocal for “At Last,” and best R&B album for “I Am . . . Sasha Fierce.”

“Poker Face” won best dance record and Lady Gaga’s “The Fame: won for best dance album. Swift’s first two wins were for best female country vocal and best country song, which she shared with Liz Rose.

In other awards, Jay-Z beat out Grammy favorite Eminem for best rap performance, and shared the best rap song Grammy with Kanye West for “Run This Town.” Other well-known winners included Michael J. Fox, whose “Always Looking Up” took best spoken word album, and comedian Steve Martin for best bluegrass album.

Zac Brown Band Songs | Leon Russell Songs | Zac Brown Band | Leon Russell Wikipedia | Stevie Nicks | Zac Brown Band Joined By Leon Russell at Gramm

For Zac Brown, just getting a Grammy nomination in the Best New Artist category is unbelievable. In fact, he couldn't quite grasp it when asked if it had sunk in yet. "No, not really. That's something that's still gonna take a while to get my head around. It's like shock almost," he told The Boot at Grammy rehearsals.

So that in and of itself would've been special enough, or even stopping in as he did just to say hey to Dave Matthews, whom Zac greatly admires. "Dave's a hero. He's a guy who's made his own path and done everything he wanted to do and has thrived in that environment, so we're proud to follow in his footsteps," he says. "There are very few people that have made it great and on this level like Dave has."

All great stuff, but there's even more this weekend for the band. They'll be joined during their performance by Leon Russell. "[We're] playing with Leon Russell, a legend," Zac gushes. "We're big-time fans of Leon, and we talked about collaborations and [producer] Ken Erhlich had run his name by us and we're like, 'Yeah, we'd absolutely love to do something with Leon.' We're big Joe Cocker fans back in the day, and Leon was the guy behind Joe Cocker for a long time. We're super excited."

What would that teenage fan of Joe Cocker say now to performing at the Grammys with Russell? "[I] never would've considered it a possibility in a million years," Zac says. "I knew we were gonna work hard and really dedicate our lives to the music and see where that took us and hopefully into a great touring career, which we've been able to develop. [But] this is an amazing milestone, it's something we'll never ever forget."

You can watch Zac Brown Band perform with Leon Russell tonight on the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards at 8:00 PM ET on CBS.

Director: Abhishek Chaubey
Cast: Naseeruddin Shah, Vidya Balan, Arshad Warsi

Ishqiya is a forthcoming Hindi film is directed by debutant Abhishek Chaubey and is produced by Raman Maroo and Vishal Bharadwaj. The movie is scheduled to be released on 29th January 2010.

After Classic Westerns and Curry Westerns, the likes of Vishal Bharadwaj seem to have designed a desi sub-genre where the bucolic Bihar backdrops are credibly carried off by the rural realms of Maharashtra’s Wai village. Call it ‘Wai-stern’ or whatever, but from Omkara to Ishqiya this rough-and-tough sub-genre has often been an antidote to candyfloss cinema, while still having a heart and in the right place.

Seeking its spirit from the 1969 Hollywood classic Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and having a soul of its own, Ishqiya is the story of two rouges Khalujaan (Naseeruddin Shah) and Babban (Arshad Warsi) who are evading their boss Mushtaq (Salman Shahid). Nowhere to go, they seek refuge in a friend’s house and instead meet his widow Krishna (Vidya Balan).

Slowly and steadily both Babban and Khalujaan are attracted towards Krishna who uses her feminine charm to seduce them singly and slyly. Together the trio plan to kidnap an industrialist (Rajesh Sharma) for ransom but there’s more to the conspiracy theory.

Ishqiya excels in narrating a saucy story and, unlike Kaminey, doesn’t gets complicated or convoluted in its storytelling. Director Abhishek Chaubey has a fresh, flirty and frivolous approach to filmmaking. The spellbinding screenplay written by Abhishek Chaubey, Vishal Bhardwaj and Sabrina Dhawan, despite being multidimensional, touches the subplots only peripherally and doesn’t delve into the past beyond the needful. So there are no elaborate background accounts for any of the three leads and you don’t wish to learn more about them either. Their past opens partially as the story progresses and only to the extent that can contribute to the central plot.

Regardless of the rugged-and-rustic ‘City of God’ kinda setting, the flavour of the film is predominantly light-hearted, as instinctive comedy oozes out from almost every sequence. The director’s hold on humour is remarkable as he makes good use of some dingy desi dialogues and some exceptional expressions by the lead male duo to hilarious outcome. The comic timing between Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi is absolutely flawless.

The crude countryside cusswords and rustic Hindi-Urdu dialect add as much entertainment to the film as much as they add authenticity to the milieu. The chemistry between Vidya Balan and Arshad Warsi is sensuously sauntered through sexual symbolism as well as physical intimacy. In contrast, the affinity between Vidya Balan and Naseeruddin Shah is more delicately developed amidst the old world charm of classic songs of Hemant Kumar and S.D.Burman. Contrarily R.D.Burman’s sharp-and-seductive number ‘Dhanno ki aankho mein’ is employed to signify the lust in Arshad Warsi’s character.

The good part of the narrative is that it doesn’t get pretentious with make-believe romance tracks. Rather from the very start, it comes clean in communicating that Vidya Balan is conning both the males. And despite that the plot doesn’t get predictable and holds you through an intriguing climax.

The most impressive scenes from the film include the opening credits sequence and the confrontation scene between Arshad and Naseeruddin Shah towards the climax, which is unusually friendly and hostile at the same time. Just prior to that sequence, Naseeruddin emotes extraordinarily where he feels betrayed by love and cheated by friend. He plays a real young at heart in the song ‘Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji’. The bigamy plot of industrialist (Rajesh Sharma) is uproariously incorporated in the story. However the absurd and open ending could have been clearly avoided.

The film has been competently shot by Mohana Krishna and crisply edited by Namrata Rao. Music essentially has to be a highpoint in Vishal Bharadwaj’s films and with Gulzar he composes sheer magic. Gulzar’s poetic pen and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s poignant voice give us one of the most mesmerizing numbers in recent times - ‘Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji’. Payal Saluja gives a new meaning to sex-appeal making Vidya Balan look absolutely stunning and desirable in her village woman garb, draped in ordinary cotton saris.

Ishqiya is highly performance oriented and each actor from the cast is superlative. To see Naseeruddin Shah deliver in a meaty role is a delight. Arshad Warsi is in his elements and this is his career-best performance. Undoubtedly this is amongst Vidya Balan’s best works too. Salman Shahid (last seen in Kabul Express) is an interesting character and Adil Hussain makes for a strong negative lead.

Ishqiya certainly is a film you will fall in love with.

Repo Rate | Reverse Repo Rate | Cash Reserve Ratio | Crr Rate | Reverse Repo | CRR hike to have no impact across sectors: Experts

In its monetary policy announced on Friday, The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) raised the cash reserve ratio (CRR) for banks by a higher-than-expected 75 basis points. However, the key interest rates were left unchanged.

Reacting to the hike, bankers said that despite the CRR hike, they had no leeway to raise rates because nobody was demanding money much these days.

The banking sector index was down 0.1% at 11:20 am, after the central bank hiked CRR. The index was up nearly 1% before the policy.

n a knee jerk reaction to the announcement, the benchmark Sensex tanked over 300 points and broke the 16,000 mark, the benchmark 10-year bond yields rose 4 basis points and the rupee and stocks extended losses.

India Inc reacts

Gaurav Kapur, Senior Economist, ABN AMRO Bank: "The policy announcement of a 75 basis points CRR hike is largely in line with expectations. The surprise element is in the upgrading of the real GDP forecast for FY10 to 7.5% from 6%. That, along with an increase in the wholesale price index (WPI) inflation forecast to 8.5% for end March 2010, suggests that the RBI might not wait until the next monetary policy in April to raise policy rates. An inter-meeting rate hike looks imminent now."

Rupa Rege Nitsure, Chief Economist, Bank of Baroda: "This is along expected lines, but slightly more aggressive than thought of. We had expected that they would do something to control to the liquidity overhang which has potential to fuel inflation in the coming months, but I still feel this may not be very effective in controlling inflationary expectations as supply shocks have been quite severe and the demand-pull pressures are still on the weaker side in the inflation process. The next policy action would be at the annual policy, and that will be conditional upon the actual credit pick-up in the fourth quarter."

V Kumaraswamy, Chief Financial Officer, JK Paper: "As of today the banks are flush with funds and in the last few months there has not been too much of credit offtake. It is not likely (that rates will go up)."

HS Bharana, Chairman, Era Infra Engineering: "I don't think there will be any impact. There is a lot of liquidity in the market. It is not going to affect lending rates."

Rajeev Talwar, Group Executive Director, DLF Ltd: "There will be no significant impact of CRR hike on the real estate sector. Banks will absorb its impact."

Venugopal Dhoot, Chairman and Managing Director, Videocon India: “The consumer goods industry will welcome this as interest rates have not gone up. There is ample liquidity available in the system, even after the CRR hike. The rural market is growing and rural population has access to the banks. Since interest rates have not gone up and GDP projection has increased demand will continue to grow."

Finnish New Treatment Reduces Breast Cancer Deaths by One Third | Finnish Cancer Researchers | Treatment of Breast Cancer | Women Breast Cancer

Finnish cancer researchers have had an important breakthrough in the treatment of breast cancer, according to Finnish media reports on Thursday.

The new treatment developed in Finland reduces the renewal risk of aggressive breast cancer and the consequent deaths by as much as a third.

In the treatment the Finnish researchers targeted a protein called HER2. HER2 is a growth factor protein, which transmits growth signals to breast cancer cells. The protein is the cause of the so-called HER-positive breast cancer. This cancer type is often difficult and aggressive and it has a strong tendency to send metastases to other parts of the body. About 15 percent of all the breast cancer patients suffer from this aggressive type.

If the renewal risk of the cancer is significant, cytostatic treatment is commenced after the operation. This lowers the risk of renewal of the cancer by 40 percent among patients under the age of 50. The risk of dying of the illness is cut down by 30 percent. For the HER-positive breast cancer patients, the Finnish researchers also gave trastuzumab in connection with their cytostatic treatment. Trastuzumab blocks the effects of the growth factor protein HER2 by binding to it.

Previously similar treatments have been experimented with elsewhere in regimens that have lasted for a year and a half. What is distinctive to the Finnish regimen is its shortness. The treatment only lasts for nine weeks.

"The new treatment form, trastuzumab, is one of the greatest advances in the past 15-20 years in the field of breast cancer research," said Petri Bono, chief physician at the Department of Medical Oncology, Helsinki University Hospital.

The Finnish study's results were astoundingly good. Five years after contracting the illness, 92.5 percent of the patients were still alive without the re-emergence of the cancer. The risks of renewal of the cancer or deaths caused by it were reduced by a third.

Encouraged by the results, a large-scale international follow- up research program has been launched.

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women. Around 1.3 million women around the globe contract the illness each year. Around 4,100 Finnish women will contract breast cancer each year.

Children, women most endangered by post-quake chaos in Haiti | Women and bereaved children in quake-ravaged Haiti

Children, women most endangered by post-quake chaos in Haiti

Women and bereaved children in quake-ravaged Haiti could fall prey to human traffickers and thousands of prisoners that have escaped from collapsed prisons, officials warned on Thursday.

Some criminals took advantage of blackouts in Port-au-Prince, harassing and raping women in makeshift camps when night fell, national police chief Mario Andresol told reporters.

Women's organizations have reported several such cases to the United Nations mission in Haiti, urging swift measures to boost security for the most vulnerable survivors after the Jan. 12 temblor, said Andresol.

Life for Haitian children was already miserable before the quake as poverty forced some parents to drop their kids temporarily in orphanages.

Many children are seen roaming the rubble-strewn streets on their own after the 7.3-magnitude earthquake. A man was caught trying to steal a baby from a tent at an improvised camp.

Child trafficking was also a chronic problem in pre-quake Haiti. Many children were taken out of the country, with some feared to have been sold to illegal traders of human organs.

Children's groups and the Red Cross have begun registering parentless children and sending some to orphanages for temporary shelter, said Bo Viktor Nylund, a senior adviser for child protection with United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

UNICEF is focusing on reuniting Haitian children with family members as a first option, and will spend several months actively seeking each child's parents before considering their adoption, said UNICEF press official Roshan Khadivi on Wednesday.

"We are taking photos and filling in forms to get the children's full details on file," Khadivi told Xinhua at a tent camp near the Toussaint L'Ouverture Airport in Port-au-Prince.

"Experience has shown us that there is at least one family member left usually," she said. "UNICEF does not believe in institutionalization in orphanages. Children need to be connected with their communities."

In efforts to boost security in the Haitian capital, Chinese peacekeeping riot police and U.S. troops Thursday carried out a joint patrol in the Careffour area in the western suburb of Port-au-Prince.

With a population of 300,000, Careffour had long been dominated by armed gangsters. A tactics team of 10 Chinese riot police and two squads from the U.S. 82nd Airborne Division patrolled the area.

The forces kept guard when the Haitian special police were searching for and questioning suspects. A man with tattoos on his right arm was arrested in the operation.

The situation in Port-au-Prince has improved as aid workers and peacekeeping forces have removed bodies from the streets and are trying their best to feed the hundreds of thousands of hungry people.

However, food and drinkable water are dramatically inadequate and stronger men were seen grabbing rice bags and other food handouts from women and children.

The ongoing World Economic Forum on Thursday gave special attention to Haiti, with former U.S. President Bill Clinton calling on business leaders to provide urgent aid to help rebuild the country.

"There are serious unmet food and water needs. Part of it is the distribution system does not exist," Clinton said at a special session on the long-term rebuilding of Haiti.

American Human Rights Hero Howard Zinn Dies At 87 | American Human Rights Hero | Boston University Historian | Human Rights Defender Active

"There is no flag large enough to cover the shame of killing innocent people for a purpose which is unattainable." Howard Zinn, 1922 - 2010

American human rights hero, Boston University historian, political activist, early opponent of US involvement in Vietnam and leading faculty and critic of BU president John Silber, Dr. Howard Zinn died of a heart attack today in Santa Monica, California.

Dr. Zinn was a human rights defender active in the civil rights, civil liberties and anti-war movements in the United States, and wrote extensively on all three subjects.

Mark Feeney of the Boston Globe Staff wrote, "For Dr. Zinn, activism was a natural extension of the revisionist brand of history he taught. Dr. Zinn's best-known book, A People's History of the United States (1980), had for its heroes not the Founding Fathers -- many of them slaveholders and deeply attached to the status quo, as Dr. Zinn was quick to point out -- but rather the farmers of Shays' Rebellion and the union organizers of the 1930s."

Dr Zinn wrote in his autobiography, 'You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train' (1994):

From the start, my teaching was infused with my own history. I would try to be fair to other points of view, but I wanted more than 'objectivity'; I wanted students to leave my classes not just better informed, but more prepared to relinquish the safety of silence, more prepared to speak up, to act against injustice wherever they saw it. This, of course, was a recipe for trouble."

Dr. Zinn opposed the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq, and wrote several books about it. He asserted that the U.S. will end its war with, and occupation of, Iraq when resistance within the military increases, the same way resistance within the military contributed to ending the U.S. war in Vietnam.

Dr. Zinn compared demand by a growing number of contemporary U.S. military families to end the war in Iraq to "the Confederacy in the Civil War, when the wives of soldiers rioted because their husbands were dying and the plantation owners were profiting from the sale of cotton, refusing to grow grains for civilians to eat."

Dr. Zinn argued that "There is no flag large enough to cover the shame of killing innocent people for a purpose which is unattainable."

Jean-Christophe Agnew, Professor of History and American Studies at Yale University, told the Yale Daily News in May 2007 that Zinn’s historical work is "highly influential and widely used".[29] He observed that it is not unusual for prominent professors such as Zinn to weigh in on current events, citing a resolution opposing the war in Iraq that was recently ratified by the American Historical Association.[30] Agnew added, “In these moments of crisis, when the country is split — so historians are split.

Dr. Zinn authored more than 20 books. He died January 27, 2010 of a heart attack at age 87, traveling in Santa Monica, California. He is survived by his daughter Myla Kabat-Zinn.

Rakhi threatens censor with hunger strike | Rakhi Sawant has given the censor-board a week | akhi Sawant ko gussa kyon aata hai?

Rakhi Sawant has given the censor-board a week to explain what she considers their irrational decision to ban her song.

“I’ll wait for a week and then I go on a bhookh hartaal in front of the censor office,” warns Rakhi. Rakhi Sawant ko gussa kyon aata hai? It’s the kameena ways of the moral police. The always-in-the-news actress is excessively angry with the censor board. “Fearlessly, I’ve sent a legal notice to the censorboard. This is the first time something like this has happened.

Others do chamchagiri of the censor board. Not me. I’m Rakhi Sawant. Main ishwar ki beti hoon. The censor board has done me injustice by deleting the word Kamini from my song. I won’t take it lying down. Dharmendra has been saying the word kaminey for years. Vishal Bharadwaj’s Kaminey came, were the censors asleep? There’re heroines doing love-making scenes with their bare backs showing. Bharadwaj’s films invariably have characters mouthing maa-bahen galis. If Rakhi Sawant sings Kamini tera bhoot chad gaya re the censor board gets stung. The song has been produced by my company Faith Inc. and I’m being damaged.”
The argument that the word kamini is inappropriate on television holds no water for Rakhi. “Kyon? In the trailers of Ishqiya they show Vidya Balan punch-drunk on television, and that too in a saree. Is that allowed in our culture? Ladkiyan Khule-aam choli utaar rahi hai. What was Choli ke peeche kya hai? What were they asking? We all know what’s behind the choli. If that can be airplayed for years why can’t my song be telecast?”

Rakhi then takes off on television serials. “Look at serials like Uttaran, Bairi Piya and Bandini. Young girls are being shown getting raped and forced to marry under-age. Women get married repeatedly, sometimes five times. Isn’t this against the Indian laws? Isn’t this against Indian culture? What is the censor board doing about such practices? Rakhi Sawant uses the word kamini and it becomes a dirty word. In serials we have men dragging their wives by their hair muttering. ‘Kamini main tujhe chodunga nahin.’ No one pays any attention. Why point a finger at me? Stop all the malpractice on television and I too will shut up. We live in a corrupt and hypocritical democracy where the institutions appointed to monitor morality are bribed. Producers go with bulging suitcases and get their films passed. Aisa nahin chalega.”

Couple arrested in connection with Indian's murder in Oz | Australian authorities arrested a couple | killing of an Indian

Australian authorities arrested a couple on Thursday, in connection with the killing of an Indian, whose partially burnt body was found dumped by the side of a road in the New South Wales Riverina in December last year.

A 23-year-old man and his 20-year-old wife, who have not been identified, were arrested at two addresses in Sans Souci in Sydney's south just after 11 am on Thursday, police said.

Victim Ranjodh Singh's body was found beside Wilga Road, Willbriggie, near Griffith, on December 29. 25-year-old Singh was last seen on the streets of Griffith three nights before his body was found.

He had recently moved to Wagga Wagga but was staying in Griffith to pick pumpkins and was living in a shared house with other farm workers from India.

The media reports here said it is understood that Singh joined a group of friends for pizza at Eagle Boys on the last night he was seen.

One of his friends had been around town longer than Singh - who arrived in Australia a little more than a year ago and had set himself up as a contractor. He befriended Singh and employed him. The group finished their pizza and went to a party at a nearby flat. They drank grappa and celebrated the birthday of one of the men, but there was tension in the air and some time before midnight a fight broke out, though it is not known who was involved.

Pay As You Go Along | Pay As You Go Laws | What Are Public Service Jobs | What Is Capital Gains Tax | Obama Will Endorse ‘Pay as you go’ Law

President Obama is calling for a so-called paygo law — as in, pay as you go law— that would require Congress to offset the cost of new tax cuts or spending on entitlement programs, like Medicare, with tax increases or spending cuts to avoid adding to the deficit, according to his press office.

The president will make his support clear in his State of the Union address tonight. A major theme of the speech will be his intention — as the economy recovers — to focus on reducing deficits that have become so large that they are a political liability.

Mr. Obama also will confirm that he will create a bipartisan debt-reduction commission and propose a three-year freeze on a one-eighth slice of the budget for domestic spending. The paygo legislation he’s endorsing is a compromise reached among Congressional Democratic leaders; it exempts future extensions of some existing tax cuts for the middle class.

Here’s an excerpt from the White House this morning:

“…In the 1990s, statutory paygo encouraged the tough choices that helped to move the government from large deficits to surpluses, and the President believes it can do the same today. Statutory paygo would hold the government to a simple but bedrock principle: Congress can only spend a dollar if it saves a dollar elsewhere….

“…Both houses of Congress have already taken an important step toward righting our fiscal course by adopting congressional rules incorporating the paygo principle, but we can strengthen enforcement and redouble our commitment by enacting paygo into law.”

The Recovery Act | Stimulus Bill | Recovery Act of 2009 | Stimulus Package | Stimulus | States improve transparency of Recovery Act spending | State

Recovery Act – State governments in Kentucky, Illinois, Minnesota and Utah made the most dramatic progress in reporting their federal economic stimulus spending online in the last six months, according to a new report from the Good Jobs First nonprofit research group.

In comparison to a previous evaluation in July 2009, Kentucky rose to 2nd place from 47th, Illinois climbed to 7th place from 50th, Minnesota jumped to 4th place from 34th, and Utah went to 24th place from 50th, according to the report. Maryland topped the list for the second year.

The research group reviewed state Web sites that reported American Recovery and Reinvestment Act spending and graded them from 1 to 100. About $200 billion from the economic stimulus law was distributed to states.

The states with the highest scores in the new report are Maryland (87), Kentucky (85), Connecticut (80), Colorado (72) and Minnesota (72).

Eleven states scored below 20, including North Dakota (5), District of Columbia (6), Missouri (10), Alaska (13), Vermont (13), Louisiana (16), Mississippi (17), Idaho (18), Oklahoma (18), Texas (18) and South Carolina (19).

“Some states are making great strides in fulfilling President Obama’s promise that the Recovery Act would be carried out with an unprecedented level of transparency and accountability,” said Good Jobs First Executive Director Greg LeRoy in a news release.

The state Web sites are linked with Recovery.gov, which is the federal government’s Web site for tracking economic stimulus law spending. Congress and the Obama administration approved $787 billion in stimulus allocations a year ago to boost the economy; a portion of the money went for information-technology projects, including energy smart grids, broadband development and health IT.

Should the UK ban the Muslim face veil? | a partial ban on women wearing Islamic face veils | The Muslim veil

A French parliamentary committee has recommended a partial ban on women wearing Islamic face veils. So should there be a similar ban in the UK - and would it work?

Just across the English Channel, allowing a woman to veil her face in public places such as hospitals, government offices and on public transport could soon be called into question.

In a country where the separation of state and religion is enshrined in law, a parliamentary committee report ruled the veil was "contrary to the values of the republic" and called on parliament to adopt a formal resolution proclaiming "all of France is saying 'no' to the full veil".

France - which is home to five million Muslims - has a history of debating the full veil, with President Nicolas Sarkozy declaring it "not welcome" in 2010.

The country banned Muslim headscarves and other "conspicuous" religious symbols at state schools in 2004.

Despite calls from some groups for a full or partial ban on veils, there is currently no ban on Islamic dress in the UK - although schools were allowed to set out their own dress code in 2007 after several high-profile court cases.

'Not British'

But could a ban by Britain's nearest continental neighbours influence policy back home?

In January 2010, Schools Secretary Ed Balls said it was "not British" to tell people what to wear in the street.

But writing in the Independent, journalist Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, who chairs the group British Muslims for Secular Democracy, said she supported restrictions on wearing the face veil in key public spaces.

"This covering makes women invisible, invalidates their participatory rights and confirms them as evil temptresses.

"I feel the same fury when I see Orthodox Jewish women in wigs, with their many children, living tightly proscribed lives," she writes.

She said progressive Muslims came out "daily" against the burka, which was an "un-Islamic custom".

"During the Hajj pilgrimage no woman covers her face. The burka makes women more, not less, conspicuous, and communication is unequal because one party hides all expression," she claimed.

'Mutual respect'

However, Yvonne Ridley, a British journalist who converted to Islam after she was captured by the Taleban in Afghanistan in 2001, said the French decision was "driven by Islamophobia - not the freedom or liberties of women".

She said she did not know anyone who had been forced to wear the niqab (which covers the face apart from the eyes) or the body-covering burka.

Some Muslims chose to wear the niqab for religious reasons - because they believed it brought them closer to their faith - she said.

She said the UK "would not tolerate" a move like the one in France.

"Muslim women in Britain are more empowered than their sisters on the continent, largely because of the amazing anti-war movement which brought secular women alongside Muslim women."

She said she understood why some people found the veil "unnerving", but insisted "everyone should have a choice".

Only a "tiny minority" of Muslims - a couple of thousand - wore the niqab in the UK, and "most of them were white Western converts who you could not say were quiet, suppressed women," she said.

"We can't allow legislation against the niqab. If we let it go the hijab will be next. Everyone should have choice. Where would it stop, hair dye, face piercing?", she said.

'Election tool'

Shaista Gohir, executive director at Muslim Women's Network UK, agreed the face veil should not be banned in the UK, but said there needed to be a "internal debate amongst the Muslim community".

"There needs to be more research on why some women choose to wear the veil and how they think they are perceived. Muslim communities need to instigate, be proactive, rather than wait for politicians like Jack Straw to say something and respond," she said.

In 2006, Jack Straw angered Muslim groups after he said face veils were a "visible statement of separation and of difference" and suggested they could make community relations harder.

Ms Gohir said she could understand people might have reservations about the impact the veil had on integration - and it might prevent women from gaining employment - but a minority of Muslims felt the interpretation of Islam meant wearing a veil was part of their religion.

She said veils needed to be looked at "properly" in a "non-racist way".

But she expressed concern that politicians might use "issues like this" in the lead-up to the elections.

Last week ex-UKIP leader Nigel Farage, who leads UKIP's 13 MEPs in Brussels, said the veils were a symbol of an "increasingly divided Britain", that they "oppressed" women, and were a potential security threat - and called for a total ban.

The BNP has already called for the veil to be banned in schools.

"Muslims are obviously in the spotlight. The BNP and UKIP are playing on an anti-Muslim sentiment; there is a real concern the face veil and issues like it will be used as an election tool", said Ms Gohir.

"Just because France are doing something, Britain does not have to follow suit."

Australia provides attacks dossier to India | Australian foreign minister Stephen Smith telephoned his Indian

MELBOURNE: Australia government has handed over to India a police dossier of high-profile attacks on Indians over the past year, which reveals that nearly half of the attackers were juveniles.

The dossier, prepared by Victoria Police, was handed over in recent weeks, after Australian foreign minister Stephen Smith telephoned his Indian counterpart S M Krishna on January 11 to express his condolences over the murder of Indian student Nitin Garg in Yarraville.

"It shows nearly half of those arrested between March 2009 and January 5 - three days after the Garg killing - were under 18," the Age newspaper reported.

The dossier shows that among the 18 high-profile cases, two cases of assault reported in May and June last year remained unsolved, the paper said.

Sources said the Australian government initially resisted providing more information to Indians as it deemed racial appearance to be a limited indicator of ethnicity because it was only based on a subjective police assessment.

It claimed people described as Indians could originate from countries such as Mauritius and Fiji.

The dossier shows that of the 18 cases, two people were run over by a train and there was no foul play. While three cases remained unsolved, 33 people have been arrested over the remaining 13 cases.

Billie Piper talks marriage | motherhood and meeting the real Belle du Jour | Billie Piper is back on TV | BIllie Piper

Billie Piper is back on TV a year after having her son. She talks about marriage, motherhood — and how playing lady of the manor nearly drove her mad

As opening shots to interviews go, you don’t happen upon much jollier than Billie Piper’s. “Shall we get champagne?” she suggests. Why ever not! Within 15 minutes she’s downed a flute, accidentally knocked it over with the sleeve of her voluminous Topshop sweater dress, emptied a half-pint of fizzy water and filled it up with 50-quid-a-pop sparkle.

She’s making up for lost time. During her pregnancy she counted down the minutes before she could indulge her casual, everyday vices once more. “I became completely neurotic and saw what I’d be like without booze and fags.” A pause. And then a chuckle. “And it ain’t pretty.”

She looks stunning. At 26 and the mother of one-year-old Winston, she has grown into her big, gobstopper facial features and has shed all of her baby-weight. “It was literally just about going mental for six weeks,” she says, of her post-Winston eating regime. “I think I was quite lucky. I wasn’t massively healthy. I just ate loads of protein. It’s either that or speed pills, and the thing is you do actually have to sleep at some point. You’ve got to try and maintain a healthy marriage and I’m not sure that amphetamines are that conducive to a successful relationship.”

Clearly, she is on demonstrably Billie-esque form. It is four o’clock in the afternoon, it is Friday, and we are in the kind of posh Covent Garden environment that would have been absolute anathema to the young Billie, a labourer’s daughter with maniacally imperfect showbiz dreams, who received the news of her first No 1 single, live on the Radio 1 Chart Show, while stoned on a playground swing in a deserted park in her native Swindon. She was 16. Ever since, there has been something about this woman that cannot help but fling herself headfirst at life.

For the latter half of her pregnancy in 2008, Billie had decamped with her new, second husband, the actor Laurence Fox, to the countryside. Having tried on the clothes of teenage pop Lolita, Mrs Chris Evans, gymslip bride, surely the only Doctor Who assistant to ever out-shine her lead, and a lengthy run as the fictional incarnation of Britain’s most infamous whore, it was time to settle into the Wellington boots of Lady of the Manor for a spell.

It sounds like she went slightly demented in Midhurst, West Sussex. “I did go a bit Sylvia Plath down there,” she says, wincing a little. “Staring at the condensation on the window and wondering where it comes from. Following slugs in the garden that hadn’t moved a foot, and feeling a bit desperate. Laurence was filming when I first had Winston. I’d had an emergency caesarean and I could barely walk. I was alone in the country with a newborn baby for three weeks.

“I’m actually grateful for that time now. It forced me to be in bed with my child. And really that was the only time that I was still, with baby, without distractions or confusion. It was just the two of us. You sleep when they sleep and feed when they feed.” And when the condensation gets too much? “Then you move back to London.”

Already, she is harbouring dark fantasies about her own future manner with her son at the schoolgate. “In my head I have arguments with the mother of a ten-year-old who is picking on my son in the playground. So wrong.” She laughs. “I get really angry. And it usually ends up physical. And then I think, ‘he’s one year old, what are you doing?’

“Only the other night I was having a conversation with Laurence. I said, ‘Is it just me or can you ever imagine letting Winston walk from our house to the end of our street on his own,’ He said, ‘No, I can’t.’ So that’s it! He’s not doing it.” God help the boy’s first girlfriend.

Part of Billie’s coping mechanisms as a new mother has been to think of her situation in respect to her own mum’s, who had four children very young, in quick succession. “Hers was an absolutely selfless act of just continually handing herself over to her children. I’ve done it a bit, but I have managed to work for six months of Winston’s 12-month life.”

The other part is trying to stop herself over-analysing what being a mother means to her as a woman. “You want to work, you want to be a wife, you want to be a mum, you want to be in control but then you also want to feel small in your husband’s arms. There are wildly conflicting emotional responses to everything.”

This is a pattern in Billie’s life. She enjoys a personal, internal tussle with both her nature and nurture. “Even now, the minute someone wants to define me I feel the need to change. The minute someone tries to put their finger on who I am, I want to be something else. It’s almost like a reflex. I’m not even sure how premeditated it is. It just happens.” Is it contrariness? “I don’t know. I think maybe I started to do it actively when I was younger and now I just can’t stop. Which makes me feel like a restless human.”

She once told me she would probably marry five times. “I’ve changed my mind now. If this one doesn’t work . . .,” she touches wood, “I won’t marry again.”

At a certain point in Billie’s public life it looked very much as if she would manage to fit 20 years of Patsy Kensit’s life into five of her own. She nods at the suggestion. “Yes, I know. I am accelerated.” Is it a basic compulsion for life? “I don’t know. I think it’s just that once you start living at a certain pace it’s really hard to reign it in and once you start living a certain way it’s hard to change that. You condition yourself, to an extent.” She pours more champagne.

If her personal life has changed enormously, her professional life has seen one small but pivotal accidental feature snap into place, too. For the first four years of Secret Diary of a Call Girl, the ITV drama that became a hit in America, Billie was sworn to secrecy about the identity of her character, Belle de Jour, the high-class hooker on whose anonymous blog the series was based. She has since been revealed as 34-year-old Bristol University research scientist Brooke Magnanti.

“It makes life easier for me,” says Billie. “Not because I hadn’t been able to tell anyone about her. I never felt compelled to anyway. But because now I can actually share the burden.”

In an unusual turn of events, Billie had become an unwilling figurehead for the liberation of prostitutes. “It will be nice to have someone else to defend the story and hopefully every time there is a story in the papers on prostitution there won’t be a massive picture of my face next to it.” She found this particularly troubling while pregnant, and during the trial of the man who murdered five prostitutes in Ipswich. “I need her to share that. Rather than me having to defend her and getting tied up in knots, she can actually defend herself and her actions. It’s now her thing. It can and it has got quite vicious in the past.”

Billie says that she found the real Belle de Jour slightly intimidating in the flesh. “She’s quite steely and composed. She speaks really slowly and she’s gentle and petite and her features are quite fine. She looks like she should be quite vulnerable.” Surely a handy asset for the work? “Oh, I’m sure. But when you read her stuff you definitely feel like it’s the man who is wide-eyed and wanders in feeling out of control.

“From the way she writes, you imagine her to be quite the Amazonian power-dresser and she’s not at all. Anyway, I found her smart in a very seemingly self-assured way. All of those things make me incredibly nervous in people.”

She’s basically the opposite of you?

“Basically, yes.”

Is she hot?

“Oh, she’s got a great rack.”

"It’s not the sex that frightens us with her, it’s the fact that money changes hands. I know loads of women who have sex with different people the whole time. Sometimes it’s reckless, sometimes it’s irresponsible and sometimes it’s just absolutely joyous. It’s the way life is. But the money changing hands affects people’s opinions."

Billie made sure she was finished with breastfeeding by the time she got back to work, five months after Winston’s birth. “Playing a prostitute and breastfeeding? That would’ve just been too weird,” she laughs, taking another glug of champagne.

In her off-time she managed to fit in an off-the-cuff celebrity-packed holiday in Miami, quite by accident. After booking the Foxes, en famille, into “the most ridiculously inappropriate beach club”, she swapped hotels to the Delano. “We walked down to breakfast and there was David Walliams eating with Dale Winton. Then Matt Lucas turned up and Jimmy Carr and his lovely girlfriend Caroline and then Louis Walsh turned up and we all spent ten days around the pool together. It was brilliant fun, an absolute laugh a minute. Totally by accident.”

She had particular fun tapping Walsh for X Factor gossip. “He is wonderfully indiscreet. He actually moved down the table one night at dinner just to be able to tell us what we wanted to know. Just fabulous.”

I wonder whether she sees anything of her younger self in the X Factor hopefuls, hiking on to the showbusiness ladder at a precociously young age, with no actual idea of what’s ahead. “Really? I’ve stopped thinking about that now.”

Even when you see a young teenage pop starlet such as Pixie Lott, there isn’t a glimmer? “Oh, but I love Pixie. She looks great.”

Billie says she’ll always have a scout for a story on Pixie in the Bizarre column in The Sun. “Just to see. I think she’s dating one of McFly at the moment. You want to speak to her when she’s going out with the boy who’s going to really corrupt her.”

And Billie’s delightfully circumspect maternal instinct comes into play once more.

The new series of Secret Diary of a Call Girl starts on ITV2 tomorrow at 10pm
