33 Americans Died in Haiti Quake | Americans Died In Haiti | 33 Americans Died

WASHINGTON, United States—The US State Department said at least 33 American citizens died in last week's earthquake in Haiti, in the latest update on US casualties.

"We have a total of 33 confirmed American fatalities" so far, State Department spokesman Philip Crowley told reporters.

One of those was a US government official. He added that three US government officials remain unaccounted for.

The State Department reported Tuesday that at least 28 Americans died in the earthquake, most of them dual Haitian-US nationals.

Crowley added that the US consular services have files on at least 12,300 Americans who were on the island at the time of the January 12 quake, and have accounted for roughly 7,500 of them.

"That means that we have not yet been able to account for 4,800 Americans, for whom we have information that they were in Haiti at the time of the earthquake," he said.

But Crowley urged reporters not to jump to conclusions, adding it is possible they "are sitting in their living rooms."

He also said a total of 6,174 Americans have departed Haiti.

Crowley said there were an estimated 45,000 Americans living in the Caribbean island nation before the 7.0-magnitude quake struck.

The spokesman said even though Washington has files on only a little more than 12,000 Americans on the island, it is possible there are tens of thousands more in Haiti.
