Abhinav Bindra, 27, is an Indian shooter from Zirakpur, Mohali, Punjab and is the current World and Olympic champion in the 10 m Air Rifle event. By winning the gold in the 10 m Air Rifle event at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, he became the first Indian to win an individual gold medal at the Olympic Games and India’s first gold medal since 1980, when the Men’s Field Hockey Team won the gold.

Bindra is the CEO of Abhinav Futuristics, the sole distributor of Walther arms in India. Abhinav has sponsorship tie-ups with Samsung and Sahara Group.

He also recently did advertisement of BSNL with Brand Ambassador and Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone.

A sportsperson’s career tends to be full of ups and downs and I too have gone through my fair share of highs and lows over the last 15 years. I Abhinav Bindra made two attempts at winning an Olympic medal — in 2000 in Sydney and 2004 in Athens — and failed both times before finally bagging the Gold in Beijing in 2008. In Athens, I came very close to winning a medal. I went through a low after the 2004 Olympics when I did well in the qualification rounds, but didn’t win. I still feel that I shot better at Athens than I did in Beijing. I was depressed then, and it was probably one of the toughest and most difficult periods in my entire career. However, my family was extremely supportive of me and that helped to a great extent. I took a few weeks off and tried to calm myself down. I tried to find strength within myself , and I believe that is the most crucial thing you can do when faced with a disheartening situation.

It took some time to come to terms with coming so close and then losing, but over time, you start thinking differently. Your outlook and perspective tends to change. I believe that failure is highly overrated—it is just a stepping stone to success. Failure and success are two sides of the same coin and if you give something all you have, you are bound to be successful. To me, success is not about winning a gold medal, but about giving it your best shot. And this applies not only to sports, but also your approach to anything else you do in life. I was always clear that I wanted to win a medal at the Olympics and I did everything I could to make that happen. I strongly believe that you have to follow your heart and inner being. Do that and persist with it. There are times when you will face disappointments and will be depressed, but the key lies in persevering and never giving up.
