It's been 13 years since his last live comedy special, and tonight Sinbad is back. At 10 p.m. he hits Comedy Central with "Sinbad: Where U Been?" He's got fresh material and wisdom from his time out of the spotlight, but some things never change. The one-time host of "It's Showtime at the Apollo" remembers the lessons he learned at Harlem's legendary venue.
2. Make sure you dress sharp and unique onstage, or you will be severely dogged.
One night they must not have liked what I wore, and they would not let the show continue. I had to go back and change. I had to go change shoes and pants. ... Another night there was this young lady in the audience going to Fashion Institute. She said, "I want to make you something," and measured me. She came back two nights later with a leather coat.
3. Don't even think about faking it. Be yourself. They know when you aren't being real.
New Yorkers are real. I had some guys on the street in New York yell at me, "It's not like your show is still on the air!" I went across the street and shook their hands. They were like, "We're just trying to give you some love."
4. Be confident onstage, even if you are scared to death. The audience smells fear.
You can fake confidence. Just like you can fake happiness, you can fake confidence. Nervous is okay. The audience respects nervous. But if you go out there scared, hell no. When Bernie Mac walked out on "Def Comedy Jam" and said, "I ain't scared of you, m—!" the crowd went wild.
5. Enjoy each moment you are allowed to be a performer. It is a privilege.
6. Never ever ever think you can diss New York and survive the performance. Dumb idea.
People always talk about "New York's not friendly. L.A. is friendly." New York is friendly, man, but you just can't come off stupid. You can't say stupid stuff.
7. Never hurts to give a shout-out to Brooklyn.
You get at least a little bit of an in if you're from out of town. It gives you enough love to get in the door.
8. Just having the courage to get onstage makes you stronger than your critics.
9. Respect all the supporting players around you — makeup, stage manager! They will still be there when you are gone and forgotten.
I've seen people be rude to the staff, and I say, "Remember these cats — they'll see people before you and after you." If you're rude to the stage manager, your mic might not be there. You'll be coming out on the wrong cue. You want a chair? You run onstage and forget your jacket? That cat will make it work for you.
10. Most important: When someone shows you love, give them some love back. No one has to come to your show — it is an honor.
