Too young to kill: How Young Is Too Young To Play A Shooter?. “I’m going to kill you! Die now!” I have to admit I felt rather concerned at both the strong tone and sentiment expressed so loudly by my six year old son as he played a shooter game.
I even looked around to see if his mother had heard the normally mild-mannered little cutie shouting death threats at the TV.
Mind you he wasn’t playing Modern Warfare 2 or Left4Dead 2…and he wasn’t hooked up to Xbox Live.
He’s only allowed to play fairly mild local multiplayer games like Perfect Dark or older Gamecube James Bond or Timesplitters games, partly because they are much less realistic and partly because they have AI controlled bots and he hates losing to his older brothers.
“My name is Hilton Montoya (name changed)…you killed my father. Prepare to DIE!”
Obviously he had been watching too much Princess Bride too.
Yet when I went in to look at him, he was lying on his stomach with controller in hand and flashed me an innocent joyful kiddie smile, unaware of having said anything so aggressive.
Video games have long been blamed for a perceived increase in aggressive or violent behaviour, especially in the young.
Though TV was also blamed in the past, I have always maintained that there are a lot of games that younger gamers should not be playing and that the current rating system in Australia doesn’t emphasise adult game content obviously enough for parents.
This is not to say that I think that overly lenient or ignorant parents allowing their kids to play more mature games are necessarily creating more violent children, but I do think that there are many games that just aren’t appropriate or healthy for them to play. Some aren’t even healthy for me to play in my opinion!
Yet here were what I would consider pretty low-level harmless shooter games making my 6 year old shout: “You’re going down baby down!“.
I was beginning to rethink my gaming parameters for children and worry that maybe the alarmists were right.
So I told my 6 year old to find his brothers and go outside and play and leave the game.
Now stand still will yahh . . . I just wanna chop yah head offfff!
They went outside and found some armour and lightsabres in the shed to play a mix of medieval Star Wars and I settled down to read the newspaper.
