Ishqiya is a forthcoming Hindi film is directed by debutant Abhishek Chaubey and is produced by Raman Maroo and Vishal Bharadwaj. The movie is scheduled to be released on 29th January 2010.

After Classic Westerns and Curry Westerns, the likes of Vishal Bharadwaj seem to have designed a desi sub-genre where the bucolic Bihar backdrops are credibly carried off by the rural realms of Maharashtra’s Wai village. Call it ‘Wai-stern’ or whatever, but from Omkara to Ishqiya this rough-and-tough sub-genre has often been an antidote to candyfloss cinema, while still having a heart and in the right place.

Seeking its spirit from the 1969 Hollywood classic Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and having a soul of its own, Ishqiya is the story of two rouges Khalujaan (Naseeruddin Shah) and Babban (Arshad Warsi) who are evading their boss Mushtaq (Salman Shahid). Nowhere to go, they seek refuge in a friend’s house and instead meet his widow Krishna (Vidya Balan).

Slowly and steadily both Babban and Khalujaan are attracted towards Krishna who uses her feminine charm to seduce them singly and slyly. Together the trio plan to kidnap an industrialist (Rajesh Sharma) for ransom but there’s more to the conspiracy theory.

Ishqiya excels in narrating a saucy story and, unlike Kaminey, doesn’t gets complicated or convoluted in its storytelling. Director Abhishek Chaubey has a fresh, flirty and frivolous approach to filmmaking. The spellbinding screenplay written by Abhishek Chaubey, Vishal Bhardwaj and Sabrina Dhawan, despite being multidimensional, touches the subplots only peripherally and doesn’t delve into the past beyond the needful. So there are no elaborate background accounts for any of the three leads and you don’t wish to learn more about them either. Their past opens partially as the story progresses and only to the extent that can contribute to the central plot.

Regardless of the rugged-and-rustic ‘City of God’ kinda setting, the flavour of the film is predominantly light-hearted, as instinctive comedy oozes out from almost every sequence. The director’s hold on humour is remarkable as he makes good use of some dingy desi dialogues and some exceptional expressions by the lead male duo to hilarious outcome. The comic timing between Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi is absolutely flawless.

The crude countryside cusswords and rustic Hindi-Urdu dialect add as much entertainment to the film as much as they add authenticity to the milieu. The chemistry between Vidya Balan and Arshad Warsi is sensuously sauntered through sexual symbolism as well as physical intimacy. In contrast, the affinity between Vidya Balan and Naseeruddin Shah is more delicately developed amidst the old world charm of classic songs of Hemant Kumar and S.D.Burman. Contrarily R.D.Burman’s sharp-and-seductive number ‘Dhanno ki aankho mein’ is employed to signify the lust in Arshad Warsi’s character.

The good part of the narrative is that it doesn’t get pretentious with make-believe romance tracks. Rather from the very start, it comes clean in communicating that Vidya Balan is conning both the males. And despite that the plot doesn’t get predictable and holds you through an intriguing climax.

The most impressive scenes from the film include the opening credits sequence and the confrontation scene between Arshad and Naseeruddin Shah towards the climax, which is unusually friendly and hostile at the same time. Just prior to that sequence, Naseeruddin emotes extraordinarily where he feels betrayed by love and cheated by friend. He plays a real young at heart in the song ‘Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji’. The bigamy plot of industrialist (Rajesh Sharma) is uproariously incorporated in the story. However the absurd and open ending could have been clearly avoided.

The film has been competently shot by Mohana Krishna and crisply edited by Namrata Rao. Music essentially has to be a highpoint in Vishal Bharadwaj’s films and with Gulzar he composes sheer magic. Gulzar’s poetic pen and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s poignant voice give us one of the most mesmerizing numbers in recent times - ‘Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji’. Payal Saluja gives a new meaning to sex-appeal making Vidya Balan look absolutely stunning and desirable in her village woman garb, draped in ordinary cotton saris.

Ishqiya is highly performance oriented and each actor from the cast is superlative. To see Naseeruddin Shah deliver in a meaty role is a delight. Arshad Warsi is in his elements and this is his career-best performance. Undoubtedly this is amongst Vidya Balan’s best works too. Salman Shahid (last seen in Kabul Express) is an interesting character and Adil Hussain makes for a strong negative lead.

Ishqiya certainly is a film you will fall in love with.

avatar making | avatar MOVIE REVIEW: 'Avatar': Giant film making most of the basics

Talk about finding your inner self.

"Avatar," the monumental and groundbreaking new film from director James Cameron, is at its heart the story of one man's struggle to do the right thing. To get to that place, Cameron creates the most impressive techno-cinema experience ever. Even if we can find small fault in the storytelling and character development, and the relative simplicity of the film's nevertheless vital messages, its excellence in other areas triumphs. As in, whoa.

In "Avatar," set in the year 2154, Sam Worthington plays Jake Sully, a former Marine recently paralyzed from the waist down, beckoned to the distant planet Pandora by scientists seeking to bond with (though it's really to ultimately take advantage of) the planet's natives. Jake becomes the brains of his own avatar, an 11-foot-tall, fast, strong and able-bodied being designed in the image of the planet's Na'vi people. While sealed inside a tank, Jake's mind is wired to the brain of this avatar, giving Jake the sensation that they are one and the same. He is tutored by head scientist Grace ---- reteaming Cameron with his "Aliens" star Sigourney Weaver ---- who at first has little use for Jake, but soon sees his value and ability.

Observing carefully are members of the corporate entity in charge of the project, concerned with only one thing ---- mining the planet for a mineral that can help solve Earth's energy crisis back home. The head of the security team for the corporation is the no-nonsense former military man Col. Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), who tolerates the scientists but makes it clear they have a single objective ---- to acquire the mineral no matter the cost to Pandora and the Na'vi.

When Jake finds himself in the dense and danger-filled jungle inhabited by the Na'vi, he's still on board for the mission when he meets the beautiful warrior princess Neytiri, played by Zoe Saldana. After a rough start, the two bond and Jake is eventually accepted by the Na'vi people as one of their own. His switch in loyalties doesn't sit well with the violence-hungry security team, who launch an all-out assault on the natives, expecting to take what they came to steal.

"Avatar," in the works for some 15 years as Cameron waited for the necessary technology to become perfected, uses motion-capture and photo-real technology, along with animation and stereoscopic 3-D, to bring forth a film unlike any we've seen previously. To Cameron's credit, the technology doesn't wow us to the point of visual exhaustion ---- we are simply aware of its special qualities as we observe.

The film's messages ---- about staying true to values, the need to treasure nature over personal gain, about using force in the wrong place at the wrong time ---- become rather elementary, even if they provide some rah-rah inspiration.

For such a big film, what is most impressive about "Avatar" are its little touches, such as how the actors move in their motion-capture performances, and the breathtaking details of the otherworldly Pandora jungle. "Avatar" goes for the awe factor, certainly, and after waiting this long, who can blame Cameron for getting so big with his film? What he's also made, though, is a film probably even more impressive with multiple viewings, if you can sit that long a second and third time. In the little things, "Avatar" successfully finds its inner self.

Avantika (Karina Kapoor) works as a teacher in New York University, US. Her father suffered a heart attack, so she comes back to Delhi from USA. She starts teaching as a professor of Psychology in Delhi and in this time, she meets Ehsaan (Saif Ali Khan). Ehsaan is a lecturer of Islamic Studies in Delhi University. During all this time, they fall in love with each other.

But university of the New York is asking her to come back for the Fall Semester by calling a few months later. Ehsaan is aware about this news and his respond is that he doesn’t mind coming to the States with her, to find a job but he wants to get married first.

Soon after the marriage, they move to US and start a new life in New York. Avantika attempts to find a job for Ehsaan and purchase a house in an Indian neighbourhood and shifts there. Then both are invited for dinner by Hamid and Anjum – their Muslim neighbour.

Avantika met the night before at the dinner those one of the women Salma visits her secretly under the excuse of gifting her sweets next morning. She just warns her that ‘Avantika’ is in grave danger. As the life goes on the truth of the Ehsaan is out and Avantika aware about the true colors of ‘Ehsaan’ that he was playing a game with her and he is a terrorist.

Avantika understands that ‘Ehsaan’ married her in order to hide his identity from the world. Ehsaan kept her inside the house when ‘Ehsaan’ comes to know that ‘Avantika’ has found out the truth. The plan of Ehsaan to hijack an airplane is also identified by Avantika. On this plane, ‘Vivek Oberoi’ a journalist is also flying.

3 Idiots Director: Raju Hirani Cast:Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Sharman Joshi, Madhavan, Boman Irani Chetan Bhagat hopes to do justice to his best book yet, Five Point Someone by bringing two big stars, Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor together for the first time for an adaptation of the book. The dismal failure of Hello! (also a Chetan Bhagat adaptation), will weigh heavily on the author's mind as the 3 Idiots is in production. Jab We Met and Socha Na Tha, both weren't love stories in the true sense of the term. In both the films, there was no romantic kick-start. Jab We Met had only one of the protagonists (Shahid Kapur) realising his love for the girl (Kareena Kapoor) who falls in love with him only towardsthe film's end." The film is a love story spread over two decades and will also mark the debut of British actor Florence.

The on-off real life pair's onscreen chemistry was thanda in Harman's debut film. Maybe they should consult their horoscopes on this one before placing their bets on it.

De Dana Dhan Director: Priyadarshan Cast: Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Sunil Shetty, Paresh Rawal Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif pair up again for a light comedy. This film brings back the team of Akshay, Sunil Shetty, Paresh Rawal, and director Priyadarshan together after eight years. Apart from the aforementioned actors it will also star Neha Dhupia and Sameera Reddy. Producer Ratan Jain says, "De Dana Dhan is the story of two friends, Akshay and Sunil, who are in search of big money. Basically they want to prove a point to their girlfriends, Katrina and Sameera."

Bharadwaj has reportedly roped in actors from theatre for the movie. Shahid himself has gone for a different look just like Saif did for Omkara and the look is being kept under wraps.

Billu Barber is loosely based on the friendship between Krishna and Sudhama, and on the Malyalam Rajnikanth hit, Kuselan. SRK plays himself in the movie and Irrfan Khan plays a small town barber. The movie explores the friendship between rich and poor, and the dire consequences it has on Billu's life. The first time combination of the biggest star Bollywood has to offer and the most promising actor is surely a formula for success.

Hissss Director: Jennifer Chambers Lynch Cast: Irrfan Khan, Mallika Sherawat, Jeff Doucette Hollywood combines with Bollywood to release Hissss, bringing to life the fabled sexy-serial-killing Naagin who is played by Mallika Sherawat. A ruthless American travels to the jungles of India and captures the Naagin's mate which sets off a vengeful journey. Filled with special effects, it remains to be seen if the movie will be good or as uncomfortable as Mallika's snake costume for the film. Apparently, she took so much time to get into the costume that they decided to not give her any dialogue in the film.
