The Madhya Pradesh police on Tuesday claimed to have cracked the brutal murder of IIM-Indore professor Amrata Pancholi with the arrest of her driver Anil Patel and his accomplice.
Pancholi hailed from Udaipur and was teaching at BITS Pilani before joining IIM. She was found lying in a pool of blood at her official quarters on the IIM campus with a dozen stab wounds on Friday morning.
The police claimed that Patel (30) committed the gruesome crime in an attempt to decamp with Pancholi’s ATM card, cash and ornaments. Interestingly, the police had initially ruled out robbery as the motive behind the murder since none of her ornaments were missing.
“The driver committed the murder and his friend, a 19-year-old college student, helped him destroy all evidences. As far as the ornaments on her body are concerned, the accused may have failed to see them,” said Srinivas Verma, superintendent of police, Indore. There was not enough light inside the house, so he may have failed to see the ornaments on her body, the SP added.
Patel, according to the police, was a regular employee of IIM-Indore and was drawing a monthly salary of Rs10,000. The accused got hold of Pancholi’s house keys and hid himself inside waiting for her to return after he came to know that she had a huge bank balance, the police said. “We have also recovered Rs 2,000, the victim’s ATM card, jewellery and a wrist watch stolen from the crime scene from his possession.”
