Six suicides in Mumbai; Govt calls meet | The spate of suicides by students in Mumbai


The spate of suicides by students in Mumbai has alarmed the Maharashtra government. Chief Minister Ashok Chavan has directed the education minister to call a meeting of heads of important educational institutions and experts to find ways to control the situation.

The government's intervention comes amid Mumbai reporting six suicides in 24 hours. Four of the students committed suicide on Tuesday. Two more deaths were reported later on.

Police said SSC student Sejal Patil allegedly hanged herself at her residence in Byculla. Her parents were in office at that time. Sejal's sister returned home in the evening to find her hanging. There was no suicide note.

In another incident, Class 12 student Deepak Upadhyay allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his house in Samta Nagar in Kandivali. Police said no there was no suicide note.

Earlier, the city's Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation had decided to rope in actor Aamir Khan to counsel the students and help them overcome academic stress.
