Petrolia is the closest town to today’s stunning 6.0 earthquake broke first on LALATE, a quake not far from January’s Eureka earthquake.

Petrolia is off the Pacific Ocean, substantially west of the 101 Freeway. Petrolia , CA is on the western leg of the Humbolt Redwood State Park, southwest of Ferndale, Fortuna. Petrolia is up north of Sinkyone Wilderness State Park.

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Northern California at about 12:20 p.m. local time today 4th Febuary 2010.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude-6.0 quake struck about 35 miles northwest of the community of Petrolia and nearly 50 miles west of Eureka. The shaking was felt within a 150-mile radius, as far north as southern Oregon and as far south as Sonoma County, according to the USGS Web site.

Lisa Girsback, a Humboldt County Sherriff’s Office spokeswoman in Eureka, said there were no reports of major injury or damage and a tsunami warning hasn’t been issued.
