MIAMI -- On the podium after his team's Super Bowl win, New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton introduced quarterback Drew Brees as the Super Bowl MVP "and the league MVP."

It was Payton's poke at the official vote that gave Colts quarterback Peyton Manning his record fourth league MVP trophy.

But who could argue with Payton's sentiment?

Brees was the league's No. 1-ranked quarterback and spiritual leader in willing the Saints to their first Super Bowl championship. He symbolized the comeback of the city of New Orleans from the deadly Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

"It's unbelievable," Brees said after his 32-of-39 passing performance for 288 yards and two touchdowns.

"Just to think of the road that we've all traveled ... the adversity we faced along the way. [The] many people that believed in us and gave us the strength to go out there and do what we did tonight, and really, what we've done all season long."

Brees was a free-agent quarterback coming off major shoulder surgery when Payton selected him to lead the Saints out of their abyss. Brees quickly embraced the added burden of giving hope to a city devastated by the hurricane.

"Four years ago, whoever thought this would be happening?" Brees said. "Eighty-five percent of the city was under water. People were evacuating to places all over the country. Most people left not knowing if New Orleans would ever come back, or if the organization would ever come back.

"We just all looked at one another and said, 'We are going to rebuild together. We are going to lean on each other.' That's what we've done the last four years and this is the culmination in all that belief."
